For All We Hold

We arrived in a valley on the north side of Smrekovec after two decades of work that carried us across the world and back, and it was here, unexpectedly, that everything started to make sense. We came to know this place slowly: its history, its rhythms, the quiet ways it had already begun to change. And then the floods came, and we felt for ourselves what we had only ever studied from a distance; how much harder it is for a landscape to weather what's coming when it's already been reshaped so deeply by human hands.

Despite the challenges, we decided to stay close to what was breaking, and to what might still be healed. That decision became The Mirn Grabn Initiative, as a small, deliberate place to pay attention, to act, and to work toward a way of living where nature and people can still hold each other up.

This valley's meadows, water, and forest are bound together, the way everything here eventually is. Living alongside them, we are learning to restore mountain creeks as the veins that keep this alpine landscape alive, to bring back meadows and their diversity that allows life to flourish, and to give native forest space and light again. We don't act alone, but alongside neighbours and experts who've chosen to walk this path with us.

Together, we're shaping something we hope can outlast us: a living model for how landscapes like this one might be cared for, here and anywhere the same questions are being asked.
